FREDERICIA, Denmark — As of Dec. 20, Ørsted has taken FID on the 2.9-GW Hornsea 3 wind farm development in the UK southern North Sea. It expects to complete construction around the end of 2027.
It follows Hornsea 1 (1.2 GW) and Hornsea 2 (1.3 GW), both of which the company operates and maintains from a hub in Grimsby on the English east coast.
In July 2022, the UK government awarded Ørsted was awarded a contract for difference (CfD) for Hornsea 3 at an inflation-indexed strike price under a framework that allows for a reduction of the awarded CfD capacity. The company plans to submit a share of Hornsea 3’s capacity in the UK’s forthcoming renewable energy allocation round 6.
All main contracts for the projects are in place, including an agreement with Siemens Gamesa for the supply of SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines with a capacity of 14 MW excluding power boost.
Hornsea 3 will also be the first project for SeAH Wind’s monopile factory in Teesside, northeast England.
The development is 160 km from the Yorkshire coast. Once online, Hornsea 1, 2 and 3 will have a total capacity above 5 GW.
The Hornsea zone also includes Ørsted’s Hornsea 4 project, which could have a capacity of up to 2.6 GW. Earlier in 2023, the government issued a development consent order.
While Ørsted will oversee installation of Hornsea 3’s offfshore and onshore substations and export cables, once the wind farm has been fully commissioned, these will be transferred to a new owner in line with UK regulations.
