MILAN, Italy — 50Hertz has awarded Prysmian PowerLink contracts totaling about €1.1 billion ($1.16 billion) for the NOR-11-1 submarine and DC31 land projects in Germany.
The developments will help the country reach its targeted installed capacity of 70 GW by 2045 for offshore wind, with the power energy generated in the North Sea sent to consumers in eastern and southern Germany.
Under the Lot2 process, Prysmian will perform the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the NOR-11-1 and DC31 projects with an overall cable length of around 1,000 km.
NOR-11, with a power transmission capacity of 2 GW, is a 525-kV HVDC submarine project that will employ subsea and underground cables along a route connecting the offshore windfarm area N-11-1 to the German grid in the Heide/West region.
The second project of Lot2, DC31 is a 525 kV HVDC underground cable project taking power from the Heide/West area to Klein Rogahn.
Both sest of HVDC ±525 kV cable systems will comprise two single-core copper cables with XLPE insulation, an XLPE metallic return (DMR) cable and a fiber optic cable. The company will fabricate the subsea power cables at its plants in Pikkala, Finland, and Arco Felice, Italy, and the submarine fiber cables in Nordenham, Germany.
In addition, the company has been named primary supplier for Lot7, with a provision allowing 50Hertz to contract future 525 kV offshore and/or onshore projects with a cable core length volume of up to 2,700 km within an agreed period.
Prysmian will deploy its cable-lay vessels to install and bury the offshore cables.
