BILBAO, Spain  DemoSATH, the floating offshore wind pilot project led by Saitec Offshore Technologies, has generated first power. It is the first floating offshore wind turbine in Spain to be connected to the grid.

The program is a collaboration with Germany’s RWE Offshore Wind and Japan’s The Kansai Electric Power Co (KEPCO).

Last month DemoSATH was installed 2 miles offshore at the BiMEP testing area at Armintza in northeast Spain, followed by connection of the pre-laid static seabed cable to the system’s motion-absorbing dynamic cable, and the link to the platform's bow turret.

That allowed transmission of the generated electricity into the local grid through the BiMEP substation.

The DemoSATH platform’s turbine can generate up to 2 MW. During the planned two-year operational period, the project will compile data on the behavior of the SATH technology, developed by Saitec, and monitoring of the systems installed on the platform to determine its interaction with the surrounding ecosystem.

Onboard are tools for the identification of birds and bats and others for monitoring marine ecosystem biodiversity (crustaceans, other invertebrates, fish, and cetaceans) to provide insights into the behavior of groups and species around the floating offshore turbine.
