UK Government awards Orbital offshore development rights for tidal turbine

EDINBURGH, UK – Orbital Marine Power has secured two Contracts for Difference (CfDs) for 7.2MW in the UK’s Allocation Round 5 (AR5) process for its floating tidal turbine.
These will allow the company to expand its development of projects in Orkney, northern Scotland, with construction of six turbines now covered by the CfD scheme.
Orbital’s O2 tidal stream turbine has been exporting low carbon electricity to the UK grid since July 2021. The 2MW+ system, claimed to be the world’s most powerful tidal turbine, is designed for deployment in multi-unit arrays.
According to the company it captures the strongest tidal and river currents, close to the sea surface, leading to a higher energy yield. The initial system exports electricity to the Orkney grid.
