NORTH PERTH, Australia — Denmark’s Copenhagen Energy has secured support from the Western Australia government for its Leeuwin offshore wind farm project.
The planned location is in Commonwealth waters between Mandurah and Bunbury. Leeuwin will comprise up to 200 turbines and six substations. These will be connected to onshore transmission stations and will supply 3 GW/year of electricity to 3 million homes and businesses.
The development should also offset more than 6 MM metric tons of CO2 annually.
Western Australia’s Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation has awarded the project lead agency status; this provides project developers with a single point of entry to the state government and assistance with approvals processes across government agencies, including federal and local authorities.
The lead agency framework applies to “significant” projects that can create jobs and development opportunities for the state. In Leeuwin’s case, there is potential for up to 14,500 jobs per GW during construction, 200 during operation and knock-on benefits such as the development of manufacturing and marine support services.
