ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands  Van Oord has become the preferred supplier for transport and installation of foundations for the 1.6-GW Nordseecluster wind project in the German North Sea, a joint venture between RWE and Northland Power.

The cluster will comprise four offshore wind farms in close proximity, 35 km north of the island of Juist and 55 km from the mainland coast.

Construction will take place in two phases, with a total of 104 extended monopiles, each weighing up to 1,750 metric tons.

This will be the newbuild Boreas vessel’s first project. It will install 44 foundations in 2025 and the remaining 60 in 2027. It is designed for transport and installation of next-generation larger foundations and turbines at offshore wind farms.

Its jacking system can lift loads of more than 3,000 metric tons. Four 126-m legs allow the vessel to be jacked up and operate in waters up to 70 m deep.

In the future, it will be able to run on methanol, which should reduce the vessel’s footprint by more than 78%, Van Oord added.
