ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands – Van Oord and DEME have installed the last of 70 monopiles for the wind turbines for CrossWind’s Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm, 18 km offshore Egmond aan Zee in the Dutch North Sea.

The project, with a total installed capacity of 759 MW, will generate at least 3.3 TWh per year, equivalent to 2.8% of the Netherlands’ electricity demand.

Van Oord installed the first monopile last October.

Project director Roeland Ris said, "With the supply of secondary steel and interarray cables on target and our offshore installation vessels fully operational, the construction of the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm is progressing well on schedule."

Wybren de Vries, Balance of Plant package manager at CrossWind, added, "The installation of the monopiles was an immense operation, with the monopiles weighing between 788 and 960 t each."

As Crosswind’s Balance of Plant contractor, Van Oord is responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the wind turbine foundations. It commissioned DEME to install the monopiles using its jackup vessel Innovation.

In addition, Van Oord is involved in the design, engineering, procurement and installation of the interarray cables, and the transport and installation of the wind turbines.

The company’s own vessel MPI Resolution is currently installing secondary steel to complete the foundations. The secondary steel sets comprise boat landings, main access platforms (with davit cranes) and internal platform that will be used for maintenance activities once the wind farm is operational.

A Nexus vessel will start installing the cables next month.
