ABERDEEN, UK  Energy Skills Alliance members, OPITO and ECITB are co-funding development of the UK Offshore Energy Skills Intelligence Hub.

Improving skills and data intelligence was one of five priorities listed in the UK’s North Sea Transition Deal Integrated People and Skills Strategy, published in May.

OPITO and ECITB will work with energy consultancy Opergy to develop a resource defining the offshore energy industry’s needs in terms of personnel and skills over the next few decades.

The UK Offshore Energy Skills Intelligence Hub will compile and interpret data from various existing sources, presenting the information on a free to access, cloud-based platform, also providing reports and insights.

Initially the focus will be on the oil and gas, fixed and floating offshore wind, hydrogen production and carbon capture utilization and storage sectors, with future scope to incorporate other industrial sectors with transferrable skills to offshore energy.

And OPITO/ECITB plan to work with trade associations, regional clusters and standards organizations.

John McDonald, CEO of OPITO and Energy Skills Alliance Chair, said, “We know workforce demand in the energy sector is likely to outstrip potential supply over the next decade. As the sources of our energy diversify and evolve, we must begin to gather consistent and comparable data, which will allow us to make targeted interventions and anticipate future needs, based on robust data and evidence.”
