LISBON, Portugal — Galp Energia has confirmed a significant light oil discovery with its Mopane-1X exploratory well offshore Namibia.

This was the first well in PEL 83 in the Orange Basin. The other partners are state-owned NAMCOR and Custos.

Following logging operations, analysis of the results will continue with a drillstem test planned in the next few weeks to determine the commercial viability.

Drilling operations at Mopane-1X will be extended to deeper targets. Upon completion, the rig will relocate to the Mopane-2X appraisal location to further evaluate the extent of the discovery.

PEL 83 is just to the north of PEL 39, containing the Shell-operated deepwater Graff-1, La Rona-1 and Jonker-1 discoveries, and north and west of PEL 56, where operator TotalEnergies made a large oil find early last year at Venus-1.
