LONDON  bp and its partners have agreed on a development concept for Phase 2 of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project offshore Mauritania and Senegal.

The company and co-venturers Kosmos Energy and state oil and gas companies PETROSEN (Senegal) and Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (Mauritania) will assess a gravity-based structure (GBS) as the basis for the GTA Phase 2 expansion project (GTA2).

It will have a total production capacity in the range 2.5 MM to 3 MM t per year of LNG.

According to bp, GBS LNG developments involve a static connection to the seabed with the structure providing LNG storage and a foundation for liquefaction facilities.

The design process also will encompass new wells and subsea equipment, integrating with and expanding the existing GTA infrastructure. And LNG liquefaction could employ electricity to help lower operating emissions.

Work is underway with contractors to progress the concept toward the pre-FEED stage. The GTA is 120 km offshore in a water depth of 2,850 m.

Under the current Phase 1, produced gas will be sent to an FPSO about 40 km offshore for processing and liquids separation, with the gas exported onward to FLNG facilities 10 km from the shore.

Phase 1 should produce about 2.3 MM metric tons per year of LNG following the planned startup toward the end of this year.

In its latest results statement, Kosmos commented that the project was about 90% complete year-end 2022.

Commissioning has started of the completed hub terminal. Four wells have been drilled and completed, with flowback at substantially higher rates than required for liquefaction.

The shallow-water gas export pipeline from the FPSO to the hub terminal has been laid and a deeplay pipeline vessel has arrived to construct the deepwater pipeline.

The FPSO, which departed the COSCO shipyard in China last month, is in Singapore for installation of fair leads. It will then continue sailing to West Africa and should arrive during the second quarter, with the FLNG vessel also on track for sailaway in the second quarter.

Hookup activities are expected to begin in the second half of the year.

Last October 2022, bp announced the signature of an E&P sharing contract for the BirAllah gas resource offshore Mauritania. The company and its partners continue to work on a planned gas-to-power project in Senegal for the offshore Yakaar Teranga discovery.
