HOUSTON -- Subsea 7 has opened a new pipeline fabrication spoolbase in Port Isabel, Texas. The spoolbase covers an area of 58 acres and is 2 km (1.2 mi) in length. The spoolbase will fabricate and store oil and gas pipelines of up to 20-in. (51-cm) diameter in lengths of up to 1.2 km (0.7 mi) for spooling onto reeled pipelay vessels.

The facility will be equipped to weld any steel line pipe material from traditional carbon steel to duplex and clad pipe, the company says. In addition, it will be able to complete the fabrication of plastic-lined pipelines, pipe-in-pipe systems, and SCRs.

The spoolbase’s first project is the fabrication and installation of two 8-in. (20-cm) flowlines totaling 58 km (36 mi) for Marathon Oil’s Droshky field development in the Gulf of Mexico. Pipeline fabrication is already underway; installation is scheduled for the fourth quarter.
