Centrica Energy Storage has awarded Wood a FEED contract for repurposing the Rough gas field in the southern UK North Sea for future hydrogen storage.

ABERDEEN, UKCentrica Energy Storage has awarded Wood a FEED contract for repurposing the Rough gas field in the southern UK North Sea for future hydrogen storage.

The Rough reservoir has been storing natural gas safely for more than 30 years and could potential satisfy over half of the UK’s hydrogen storage requirements, according to Centrica.

Wood’s scope covers new pipelines, a new unmanned offshore installation, and onshore injection facilities at the Easington Gas Terminal on the English east coast, as the first step to making the field hydrogen-ready.

Centrica aims to position the Rough Field as the world’s largest long-duration hydrogen storage facility, although FID on the redevelopment project would depend on government support.
