BONDI JUNCTION, Australia — Pilot Energy says an application to Declare a Greenhouse Gas Storage Formation over the WA 31-L license area offshore Western Australia has secured approval from a Northern Territory Ministry.
This came from the Commonwealth Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia, Madeleine King.
The declaration instrument notes a storage capacity of 13.4 MMmt for the offshore Cliff Head storage formation, said to be sufficient for the initial stage of the Mid West Clean Energy Project (MWCEP) Cliff Head CO2 Storage project.
It follows an application to the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA) in November 2022.
The declaration helps to de-risk the project as it was the key condition for various commercial agreements, including the WA 31-L acquisition deed between Pilot and Triangle Energy (Global).
According to Pilot, it is also the first of its kind for an offshore CO2 storage project in Australia and should help de-risk the MWCEP for potential international project partners.
Pilot, Genesis, the MWCEP owners engineer and the pre-FEED contractor now expect to finalize the pre-FEED work stream this month.
They will then proceed with the next phase of development, which involves traditional owner and stakeholder engagement, the CO2 storage project FEED and the final selection of hydrogen and ammonia technology partners, allowing the ammonia FEED to start later this year.
In parallel, the MWCEP team will continue to engage with regulators on progressing the remaining project approvals including an injection license as well as federal and state environmental approvals.
Pilot aims to convert the offshore Cliff Head oil field and associated infrastructure from oil production to CO2 storage as part of the MWCEP.
The company has a 21.25% interest in the Cliff Head oil field and Cliff Head infrastructure (rising to 100% on completion of the acquisition of Triangle Energy (Global)’s share), and a 100% interest in exploration permit WA-481-P.
