NEW ORLEANS -- A deep well discovery in 20 ft (6 m) of water in South Marsh Island block 230’s Davy Jones prospect is reported by McMoRan Exploration Co.
The well was drilled to MD of 28,263 ft (8,615 m). Wireline logs indicate 135 net ft (41 net m) of hydrocarbon-bearing sands in four zones of the Wilcox section of the Eocene/Paleocene. Flow testing is required to confirm production rates. McMoRan says it will deepen the well to 29,000 ft (8,839 m).
Development drilling could make Davy Jones one of the largest shelf discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico in decades, according to James R. Moffett, co-chair of McMoRan.
