KASSEL, Germany — Wintershall Dea and its partners have made a potentially large discovery in Block 30 in Mexico’s offshore Sureste Basin.
The Kan prospect is 25 km from the Tabasco coast in 50 m water depth. The discovery well, drilled by the Borr Ran rig, encountered more than 170 m net pay sands in the Upper Miocene with good petrophysical properties and high-quality oil, Wintershall Dea said, reaching a total depth of 3,317 m.
An updip sidetrack down to 3,087 m followed, with about 250 m of cores recovered across the main reservoir sands. Early analysis indicates 200 MMboe to 300 MMboe in place.
Hugo Dijkgraaf, Wintershall Dea’s CTO and executive board member responsible for global exploration, said, “It was one of the most contested blocks of Mexico’s bid round 3.1 back in 2018. It is a significant step to extending our footprint in Mexico contributing to the development of a potential new hub in the shallow waters of the Sureste Basin.”
Other Miocene discoveries in the region include Zama, Polok and Chinwol, where Wintershall Dea holds further interests.
The Block 30 consortium, which includes Harbour Energy and Sapura OMV, will assess the retrieved subsurface data to prepare an appraisal plan for Kan, to be submitted to Mexico’s Hydrocarbon Agency CNH (Comisión Nacional de Hidrocarburos) before the end of July.
After the Kan-1EXP well and the sidetrack were completed, the Borr Ran rig was moved to a second prospect to be drilled at Wintershall Dea’s Block 30, namely Ix, located approximately 20 kilometers northeast of the Kan discovery.
