ABERDEEN, UKCoretrax has completed the first deployment of its expandable liner technology offshore Norway since acquiring Mohawk Energy in May 2019.

RelineDL is a hydraulic expansion system that allows operators to isolate low pressure or thief zones that can be encountered while drilling.

According to the company, it provides a significant inner diameter advantage compared with a conventional liner string, facilitating safe passage of larger completion strings, and helping to maximize production.

With planning and support from Aberdeen, the expandable drilling liner was mobilized when an unnamed Norwegian operator needed to isolate the gas cap in a lateral well during a drilling campaign.

Compared to other methods, Coretrax said, the tool allowed the operator to kick-off much deeper in the well, eliminating the need to drill a section of the wellbore and install a tieback.

The system was fully expanded within 6 hr, the entire project was completed in less than 40 hr and as a result, rig-time was cut by 14 days.

RelineDL is also said to provide the option of adding a casing string in either planned or contingency scenarios, with minimum loss of wellbore diameter.
