OSLO, Norway – Aker BP has made a small gas discovery 50 km (31 mi) southwest of the Skarv field complex in the Norwegian Sea.

The semisubmersible Deepsea Nordkapp drilled well 6506/5-1 S, the first on production license 1008, in 409 m (1,342 ft) of water at a location 210 km (130 mi) west of Brønnøysund.

According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, the well encountered a gas column of around 15 m (49 ft) in total in the Lysing formation.

Early analysis suggests 1-2.4 bcm of recoverable gas. The well has since been temporarily P&A’d after being terminated in the lower Cretaceous Lange formation.

The Deepsea Nordkapp will next drill observation well 25/4-K-7 H for Aker BP on the Alvheim field in the central Norwegian North Sea.
