COPENHAGEN, Denmark — The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) has authorized Wintershall Noordzee to finally phase out operations at the Ravn Field platform in the North Sea. It represents the first full decommissioning of an oil and gas field in the Danish sector.

Wintershall Nordzee can now cease the extraction of oil and gas, de-couple the offshore pipelines and supply pipelines, and finally decommission/remove Ravn’s jacket and topsides.

Prior to granting approval, the DEA performed an environmental assessment process that included an Espoo consultation on the project’s cross-border impacts, and discussions with neighboring countries.

The DEA expects to make a decision later this year concerning decommissioning of Ravn’s pipelines.

The field is 245 km from the Danish west coast in permits 5/06 and 2/16. Activities related to de-coupling of pipelines and decommissioning of the jacket and platform should start in June and complete by the end of September 2024.

Wintershall Nordzee expanded the development with an unmanned oil production platform connected to the German North Sea A6-A platform with two pipelines and a supply line. Ravn’s production has been handled and processed on A6-A.

The Ravn platform and associated installations were built in 2015, with production taking place between 2017 and 2020. In December 2021 the operator announced that it wanted to cease all activities in the Raven permits.
