bp has successfully completed its first pressure coring sampling operation in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, according to an Oct. 17 company news release.

The pressure coring technology is designed to take core samples at in-situ reservoir conditions while minimizing fluids loss and core damage.

Four full pressurized core samples were taken from the BaIakhany VIII Formation through a newly drilled well on West Azeri, with all fluids captured and preserved in their in-situ condition. The samples, and the data from onsite analysis, have been dispatched to a laboratory for further analysis.

Tests will be conducted to reduce uncertainties over the residual oil saturation under water flood conditions in the ACG Balakhany reservoir.

According to bp, the results should strengthen its understanding of the subsurface, support decisions on enhanced oil recovery methods and improve predictability of planning for future development.
