STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Vattenfall has signed a letter of intent with SSAB for supplies of fossil-free steel produced with HYBRIT technology at SSAB’s pilot plant in Luleå, Sweden.
The duo started their HYBRIT initiative in 2016, with joint ownership of Hybrit Development. Steel from the pilot plant will be produced with sponge iron from next year onward.
Vattenfall needs high-strength steel for applications including sections of foundations for offshore wind farms. The company also aims to work with subcontractors that use fossil-free steel, and it wants at least 10% of its steel purchases to be fossil-free from 2030.
It will collaborate with SSAB on sustainability calculations and the life-cycle assessment method of calculating CO2 emissions for this process.
