TORONTO, CanadaSintana Energy has closed its acquisition of an initial 49% interest in Giraffe Energy Investments.

Giraffe has a 33% stake in petroleum exploration license 79 (PEL 79) offshore southwest Namibia, which covers blocks 2815 and 2915 and is located inboard of blocks operated by BW Energy, Rhino Resources and Shell.

State-owned NAMCOR owns the remaining 67%.

PEL 79 is in the northern Orange sub-basin. An initial interpretation of the block led to the identification of potential targets in Upper Cretaceous and Lower Cretaceous deltaics. As the block is adjacent to the BW Energy-operated Kudu gas field, there is also the potential for the extension of the Kudu trend into the license.

The 2815/15-1 well drilled by Chevron had gas shows.

Last year, BW Energy acquired 4,600 sq km of 3D seismic across all of PEL 3 (containing Kusu), aimed at developing oil prospectivity on the license.
