HOUSTON  Brazil’s renewable energy and CO2 storage potential will feature strongly in Petrobras’ presentations at OTC this week.

In partnership with Equinor, the company is assessing the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of developing seven offshore wind projects around Brazil’s coasts.

In this afternoon's 2 p.m. panel, "Finding Offshore CO2 Storage: Going Big and Moving Fast," Reservoir Executive Manager Tiago Homem will provide updates on the progress on a CO2 capture and geological storage hub project and the potential for integration with other production activities in Brazil to reduce greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions.

Around the same time, Engineering Technology and Innovation Officer Carlos Travassos will be on the panel "Brazilian Energy Outlook: Strengthening the Offshore Activities." Travassos will present Petrobras’ advances in deepwater and ultradeepwater production; how presalt oil is one of the lowest GHG emitters worldwide; and the role of gas as a transition fuel in Brazil.

He will also cover the company’s plans to invest $5.2 billion in expanding its gas production capacity by 55 MMcm per year.

At 8 a.m. tomorrow (May 2), E&P Officer Joelson Mendes will join the panel "The Evolving Offshore Frontiers," at which he will outline investments in frontier regions such as the Equatorial Margin, stretching from the coasts of the state of Amapá, northern Brazil, to Rio Grande do Norte in the northeast.

Petrobras has been applying artificial intelligence and advanced algorithms to reduce geological uncertainties, the risks of E&P activities and the number of wells needed for new fields. This should lead to substantial cuts in emissions from the company’s operations.

Finally, at 12:30 p.m. on May 3, Energy Transition and Sustainability Officer Maurício Tolmasquim will deliver the lecture "New Perspectives for the Brazilian Energy Sector: The Renewables Drive," highlighting the advances of the energy transition worldwide, Brazil’s potential for renewable energy generation and the synergies between renewable sources and hydropower.

He will also explain how Petrobras is preparing for the energy transition, based on investments included in its Strategic Plan for the 2023-2027 period.
