KASSEL, Germany — Wintershall Dea Technology Ventures is acquiring a 24% stake in smart well flow diagnostics specialist Wellstarter.
The Norwegian company, whose existing shareholders and indirect investors include Prores, Equinor and Shell, has developed real-time wireless downhole flow monitoring. Its Heatwave Inflow Profile log (HIPlog) technology is designed to optimize reservoir management.
According to Wintershall Dea, associated decisions such as where to drill infill wells, how to complete a well and how to balance production and injection all require reliable downhole production data.
While conventional production logging tools can involve high costs and risk, HIPlog is said to provide cost-effective, low-risk and emission-free tracing of steady-state flow with real-time information based on heat pulses released into the well stream.
Sensors pick up the heat pulse for real-time analysis, either on site or remotely.
The technology suits most well conditions, said Andreas Berger, managing director of Wintershall Dea Technology Ventures.
Berger added, “Because the solution is also applicable for CO2 injection monitoring, we see potential for the technology not just in E&P but also in our growing carbon management business.”
