STAVANGER, NorwayEquinor has awarded Tromsø-based Lufttransport a five-year contract to operate two new search and rescue (SAR) helicopters at the Troll and Oseberg area in the northern Norwegian North Sea.

Lufttransport will become the third helicopter operator to qualify for assignments on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), Equinor added, with an option for five one-year extensions to the contract.

The contractor will take delivery of the two helicopters during spring 2025, with both due to be ready for operation from 2026. Leonardo AW 139 aircraft are used in the offshore industry globally and by the Norwegian Air Ambulance.

“With this contract, we get well-equipped machines capable of operating well under the conditions on the NCS, and in accordance with our safety requirements, both for search and rescue and transportation purposes,” said Ørjan Kvelvane, Equinor's senior vice president for joint operations support.

One helicopter will be stationed at the Oseberg Field center while the other, providing SAR backup, will be stationed at the heliport at Flesland. But primarily it will be used for passenger traffic to and from Equinor-operated installations.

Both will join the two Sikorsky S-92 aircraft that currently perform these tasks.
