OSLO, Norway – TGS has started work on a new 3D reprocessing project offshore Malaysia.
The first stage will span a 16,957-sq km (6,547-sq mi) area, integrating existing 3D seismic data offshore Peninsular Malaysia. TGS’s consortium partner DownUnder GeoSolutions (DUG) will process 36 3D legacy surveys of the Malay Basin at its center in Kuala Lumpur, applying a comprehensive broadband workflow.
This will include FWI, Q-Migration, and Q-Tomo, forming a single contiguous 3D volume. According to TGS, the aim is to develop a modern regional scale dataset that allows oil and gas companies to evaluate the basin. The results, it adds, should support improved play mapping and structural understanding, identification of new exploration opportunities, and re-evaluation of reserve estimates in late-life fields. This initial phase is part of Petronas’ basin revitalization initiative.
Stage 1 includes acreage offered in the 2022 Malaysia Bid Round, such as the PM428 exploration block, the Abu Cluster late-life asset (LLA) for re-evaluation, and other oil and gas clusters which will be tied regionally for the first time using modern processed 3D seismic data. Kristian Johansen, ceo of TGS, said there was demand for modern data to help address the regions’ energy supply challenges. As a member of the Sarawak multi-client consortium, the company is also acquiring 3D seismic offshore Sarawak.
Results from the first-phase program could lead to expansion of the project, with further stages covering a potential area of over 40,000 sq km (15,444 sq mi). Final time and depth migrated products should be issued in Q2 and Q3 2023, with interim products made available earlier.
