ZWIJNDRECHT, the Netherlands – The topsides and jacket for Statoil’s Oseberg Vestflanken 2 unmanned wellhead platform have sailed from Heerema Zwijndrecht.

In February 2016, Statoil awardedHeerema Fabrication Group (HFG) a contract covering engineering, procurement, construction, transportation and finally installation of the platform in the Norwegian North Sea.

HFG and Statoil jointly devised a ‘lean’ engineering concept, with fabrication starting last June.

The 900-metric ton topsides, completed a year later, is 25 m (82 ft) long, 23 m (75 ft) wide and 20 m (65.6 ft) high, while the 4,400-metric ton (4,850-ton) jacket is 138 m (453 ft) tall with a foot print of 36 x 36 m (118 x 118 ft).

Heerema Marine Contractors is managing transportation to the offshore location and will also undertake the installation with the SSCVHermod, 8 km (5 mi) northwest of the Oseberg field center and 130 km (81 mi) northwest of Bergen.

Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven, CEO of HFG, said: “Our design of an unmanned wellhead platform with no facilities, helicopter deck or lifeboats represents a new solution with great possibilities. It meets the challenges of lower investment costs and higher efficiency requirements.”

This project is the first of three phases Statoil has planned for developing the remaining reserves in theOseberg area. The Oseberg Vestflanken platform features 10 well slots, and two existing subsea wells will also be re-used.

All the wells will be controlled remotely from the field center, and the wellstream will be sent here via a new subsea pipeline.

Statoil expects the development to extract 110 MMboe, with production starting next spring.
