ZUG, Switzerland – Nord Stream 2 AG has started the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure in Russia for the Nord Stream 2 twin gas pipelines through the Baltic Sea.
Under the first phase of the program it has made available relevant project documents, including the terms of reference and the EIA program, for public discussion and consultation.
In addition, the company has published reports prepared by independent environmental consultants which provide a comparative environmental assessment of the route options for the Russian section of the pipeline.
Based on an analysis of the route and landfall options, the Nord Stream 2 consortium has selected the Narva Bay route in the Kingisepp District of the Leningrad Region as its preferred option due to the lesser overall environmental and social impact.
However, the Russian environmental authorities will take the final decision on the Russian landfall.
During the next phase, the consortium will put together the EIA and present a draft EIA report for public consultation. This is the main condition for obtaining the required permits to build the newpipelines through the Baltic Sea.
The EIA includes analysis of hydro-meteorological, geological, biological, social, economic and other conditions, as well as nature-protected areas, rare species, vulnerable habitats and other factors.
