PORTISHEAD, UK – ExxonMobil has joined the joint industry project (JIP) developing Viper Subsea’s V-LIFE electrical insulation resistance improvement system (V-IR).
The project, formed via the UK’sIndustry Technology Facilitator (ITF), is currently supporting a shallow water trial of the system at Portishead Quays marina in western England. Other operators in the JIP are Total, BP, Shell, and Chevron.
The trial runs in phases and will last up to 12 months, during which time the V-IR technology suite will undergo communications and performance testing in a sea water environment.
Viper says the V-IR will locate electrical faults onsubsea oil and gas installations, allowing field operators to better plan for repair or replacement of failed components, saving millions of dollars in halted production.
