OSLO, Norway – Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) Norway has approved ExxonMobil’s request to bring onstream a new subsea well at the Balder field in the North Sea block 25/11, 190 km (118 mi) west of Stavanger.
Balder, part of production license PL 001, was Norway’s first-ever oil discovery, in 1967, although at the time it was not thought to be economic to develop.
However, a reassessment nearly 30 years later led to the project going forward with production starting in 2009.
The field features a floating production unit (FPU) connected to subsea wells. Although production was originally expected to end in 2011, theRinghorne field tieback to the FPU in 2006 led to ExxonMobil gaining consent to extend the facility’s operating life to 2025.
PSA gave its consent for use of six new subsea wells on the field. The latest consent relates to well E-29-AH, around 3,500 m (11,483 ft) from the FPU.
