STAVANGER, Norway – Samsung Heavy Industries has started construction of the Johan Sverdrup riser platform in South Korea.

According to operator Statoil, this will be the largest of the four first-phase platforms measuring 124 m (407 ft) long, 28 m (92 ft) wide and 42 m (138 ft) high, and weighing 23,000 metric tons (25,353 tons).

It will also play a key role on the field center as the reception point for power from shore that will maintain operations on the Johan Sverdrup field for more than 50 years.

From this platform the produced oil and gas will be exported to terminals at respectively Kårstø and Mongstad.

Statoil has left 2,500 sq m (26,910 sq ft) of free deck space for future equipment and technology that may improve recovery and extend the life of the Johan Sverdrup field during future phase, or other future discoveries on the Utsira High region.

Construction of the processing platform (P1) for Johan Sverdrup will start later this month.
