LONDON – Independent Oil and Gas (IOG) expects Transocean’s Sedco 704 semisubmersible to start appraisal drilling on the Skipper oil discovery in the UK northern North Sea during the second half of July.
The field is in block 9/21a in license P1609, in which IOG has a 100% interest. Drilling is expected to last around 22 days.
The vertical well will be drilled to 5,600 ft (1,707 m) with the main aim of retrieving good quality reservoir condition oil samples in order to optimize the Skipper field development plan.
It will also penetrate two mapped reservoir structures beneath Skipper in the Lower Dornoch and Maureen formations.
Skipper could hold 34.1 MMbbl, based on a recovery factor of 25% and successful flow tests from other heavy-oil fields in the area. The underlying structures could hold 46 MMbbl.
