LONDON–Statoil has awarded GE Oil & Gas a surface wellhead and christmas tree equipment and services contract for its Johan Sverdrup project offshore Norway.

GE said it will manufacture, deliver, and install its standardized surface wellhead and christmas tree systems at multiple wells within the field. The new multi-year agreement will service and support the project over the life of the field.

The christmas tree system incorporates a valve that increases the longevity of maintenance intervals, which the company said results in reduced downtime.

First discovered in 2011, theJohan Sverdrup field is one of the largest oil fields in the North Sea. Located 155 km (96 mi) west of Stavanger, Norway, the giant Johan Sverdrup has expected resources of between 1.7 and 3 Bboe.

The two companies signed amaster service agreement that GE said formed the basis for potential new contracts for subsea equipment and services on new projects and field developments. The contract is valid globally until 2025.
