DALLAS– Kosmos Energy has successfully delineated its Ahmeyim gas discovery offshore Mauritania.
Ahmeyim-2 was drilled 5 km (3.1 mi) northwest and 200 m (656 ft) downdip of the Tortue-1 discovery well in around 2,800 m (9,186 ft) of water, to a TD of 5,200 m (17,060 ft).
As foreseen, in the lower Cenomanian and Albian the well penetrated the seismic-inferred gas-water contacts, defining the field limit and extending the productive area from around 50 sq km to 90 sq km (19 sq mi to 35 sq mi).
In addition, the well confirmed significant thickening of the gross reservoir sequences down-structure and static fluid pressure communication within the lower Cenomanian between Ahmeyim-2,Tortue-1, and Guembeul-1.
It delivered 78 m (256 ft) of net gas pay in two high-quality reservoirs, including 46 m (151 ft) in the lower Cenomanian and 32 m (105 ft) in the underlying Albian. These results, Kosmos said, indicated field-wide reservoir continuity and suggest that Tortue West is a large, straightforward gas field.
Kosmos has raised its Pmean gross resource estimate for the Tortue West structure from 11 tcf to 15 tcf as a result of extending the field area in the Cenomanian and the Albian, and for the Greater Tortue complex from 17 tcf to more than 20 tcf.
Chairman and CEO Andrew G. Inglis said: “Ahmeyim-2 is our fourth successful exploration and appraisal well and continues our 100% success rate in the outboard Cretaceous petroleum system offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
“With this well, we believe we have proven sufficient gas resource to underpin a world-scale LNG project in the Tortue West structure alone...
“Our well-to-seismic calibration has again been proven, highlighting the reliability of this tool and increasing our confidence in its use for fully unlocking the basin, which we believe has significant potential for both oil and gas.
“We now plan to drill the first of three independent oil tests in our blocks offshore Mauritania andSenegal, starting with the Teranga-1 well, located in the Cayar Offshore Profond block, offshore Senegal.”
Since 2012, Kosmos has held rights to conduct exploration in the C-8, C-12, and C-13 contract areas under PSCs with the government of Mauritania’s Société Mauritanienne Des Hydrocarbures et de Patrimoine Minier (SMHPM), in partnership with SMHPM (10%).
The blocks are contiguous, in waters ranging from 1,000-3,000 m (3,281-9,842 ft), with combined acreage of around 27,000 sq km (10,425 sq mi).
