NEL raises bar for flow meter pressure, temperature tests

EAST KILBRIDE, UK ā NEL is investing Ā£1 million ($1.54 million) in a new flow meter calibration facility capable of testing at higher pressures and temperatures.
By more accurately reflecting the increasing temperatures and pressures at which flow meters must operate, NEL adds, the uncertainty of meters deployed in the field should be minimized significantly.
Douglas Griffin, head of petroleum measurement & allocation at the Oil & Gas Authority, said: āBoth equipment manufacturers and operators face significant flow measurement challenges, with elevated temperatures and pressures causing a substantial gap between calibration and actual service conditions.ā
The pressure capability of the new high-pressure/high-temperature liquid flow loop will increase from the current 5 bar (73 psi) maximum capability to 100 bar (1,450 psi), with the temperature range increased from the current 40Ā°C (104Ā°F) maximum to 80Ā°C (178Ā°F).
It is expected to become fully operational this summer.
