ABERDEEN, UK – The newbuild semisubmersible Deepsea Aberdeen has started development drilling on the Loyal field west of Shetland.

Under the seven-year campaign for operatorBP, it will also drill wells across the Schiehallion field as part of the Quad204 re-development.

The sixth-generation, dual derrick rig, owned by Odfjell Drilling, is designed to operate in harsh environments, and to drill in water depths up to 3,000 m (9,842 ft).

Initially it will drill two producers and one injector on Loyal before moving onto Schiehallion. BP expects five wells to be drilled prior to first oil from the newGlen Lyon FPSO on Schiehallion at the end of 2016.

BP (operator) and Shell each have a 50% interest in the Loyal field. The Schiehallion field ownership interest is split between BP (operator) with 33.35%; OMV (11.76%); and Shell (54.89%).
