LERWICK, UK – Lerwick Port Authority has commissioned an extension of the deepwater quay at Dales Voe South in Shetland to support subsea developments and decommissioning in the North Sea.
The Scottish business unit of civil engineering contractor BAM Nuttall is the main contractor for the $18.43-million program to lengthen the quay by 75 m to 130 m (246 ft to 426 ft).
The extended quay should provide deepwater, berthing and heavy load-bearing capacity of 60 metric tons (66 tons)/sq m to take an offshore structure in a single lift, with an expanded laydown area. It will have 12.5 m (41 ft) water depth alongside, one of the deepest for any quayside in Scotland.
Work on the project starts in April and should be completed within a year.
The extension will be complemented by an increased, adjacent laydown for equipment and materials which should reach 45,000 sq m (484,376 sq ft) by 2016.
