STAVANGER, Norway – Statoil has awarded Aibel a NOK 8 billion-plus ($1.048-billion) contract to construct the deck for the Johan Sverdrup drilling platform in the North Sea.
Aibel will be responsible for engineering work (to be performed in Asker, near Oslo), procurement and construction.
The deck will comprise three modules. Aibel will build the largest, the main support frame, at its yard in Thailand, and the drilling support module, the next largest, at its site in Haugesund, Norway.
Partner Nymo will build the drilling equipment set in Grimstad.
Assembly and mechanical completion of the three modules will start during the fall of 2017 in Haugesund, with the finished platform due to be handed over to Statoil in spring 2018.
Johan Sverdrup’s first-phase development calls for a bridge-linked platform complex comprising accommodation, drilling, riser and process installations, along with three seabed templates for water injection. The platforms will be connected by walkways. Norway’s parliament will likely ratify the development plan later this year.
