HOUSTON –The International Association of Geophysical Contractors has urged action on existing Atlantic Ocean seismic survey permits following the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s release of its draft five-year plan for US continental shelf leasing.
“We are very pleased that the administration has decided to open up parts of the US Atlantic outer continental shelf (OCS) to oil and gas exploration activities, in addition to including areas of existing exploration and development in Alaska andGulf of Mexico,” said Ken Wells, IAGC president.
“This decision increases the urgency to move forward with seismic and other geological and geophysical (G&G) surveys in the Atlantic OCS. IAGC strongly urges the administration to act quickly and efficiently to process the survey permits pending since last July when BOEM authorized G&G exploration in the mid- and south Atlantic OCS.”
He continued to note that the surveys would identify areas that may hold recoverable reserves as well as areas that may not to help make informed decisions on using the resources for future energy security.
