MOSCOW – TomskNIPIneft Institute has completed studies of oil samples from the Universitetskaya-1 discovery well, recently drilled by Rosneft and ExxonMobil in the Kara Sea offshore northern Russia. Rosneft proposes naming the field Pobeda.

The studies analyzed reservoir fluid, drill cuttings and core samples, confirming an ultra-light oil that surpasses Brent and Siberian light crude in terms of quality, density and sulfur content, Rosneft reports.

It is reportedly comparable to oil from the Vietsovpetro-operated White Tiger oil field offshore southern Vietnam. Also, Pobeda’s oil has a high light cut yield of 60%-70% and a low tar content of 1.5%.

Based on results to date, using equipment including gas chromatography, isotope, and molecular mass spectrometry, the TomskNIPIneft research team estimate resources from the discovery at 391.9 bcm (10 tcf) of gas and 128.7 MM tons of oil.
