THE HAGUE, the Netherlands – Shell has started oil production from the Gumusut-Kakap semisubmersible platform offshore Malaysia.
TheGumusut-Kakap field is in water depths of up to 1,200 m (3,900 ft). The platform, built by Malaysian Marine and Heavy Engineering in Johor, includes a four-deck, 23,000-metric ton (25,353-ton) topsides with living quarters for 140 personnel.
It is designed to handle peak oil production of around 135,000 b/d and will be connected to 19subsea wells. Work on the gas injection facilities continues. These are due to start up during 2015.
The project uses Shell Smart Fields technology to control production from the subsea wells. Oil is transported to the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal onshore at Kimanis, Malaysia, via a 200-km (124-mi) subsea pipeline.
Eventually, the company says, Gumusut-Kakap could supply up to 25% of Malaysia’s oil production.
