COPENHAGEN, Denmark – The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) has received a record 25 applications from 15 oil companies in response to its 7th North Sea licensing round.

Many applicants have not previously held licenses inDenmark.

Denmark’s minister for Climate, Energy, and Building, Rasmus Helveg Petersen, said the response “confirms that the oil companies are still confident that interesting discoveries can be made in the Danish area. This is positive because it means we can maintain stable exploration activity along with investments in highly specialized workplaces in Denmark.”

The 7th Round opened April 24, 2014. On offer were all unlicensed areas in the Central Graben, where most of Denmark’s fields have been discovered, along with areas to the east which brought oil discoveries in licenses awarded under the 6th Round.

DEA expects to issue the new awards early next year, after the minister has submitted a statement to the Climate, Energy, and Building Committee of the Danish parliament.

In the future, DEA intends to hold licensing rounds at more regular intervals of around one year. It aims to initiate the 8th Round in mid-2016.
