KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – SapuraKencana Energy (SKE) has discovered gas with its fifth well this year on the SK408 production-sharing contract (PSC) area offshore Malaysia.

The company describes Bakong-1 as a significant discovery with a gross gas column of more than 600 m (1,968 ft) in the primary target reservoir within late Miocene carbonates. It also appears to be one of the largest finds anywhere in Malaysia this year.

Previously SKE also found gas with the Teja-1, Gorek-1, Legundi-1, and Larak-1 wells. The five discoveries to date hold combined in-place reserves of more than 3 tcf (85 bcm).

All the wells have been suspended for completion as gas production wells in the future.

SKE says it plans another five-well exploration campaign in 2015 on the block to target additional gas prospects. Its partners are Petronas Carigali and Sarawak Shell Bhd.

SK408 is in shallow water, 120 km (74.6 mi)offshore Sarawak and covers an area of roughly 4,480 sq km (1,730 sq mi) in the prolific central Luconia gas province.
