LONDON -Tullow Oil plc did not encounter hydrocarbons in the Lupus exploratory well, 31/10-1, in the North Sea. This is the first well drilled in production license, PL 507, which is situated 21 mi (35 km) southeast of the Oseberg Sor field and 68 mi (110 km) west of the island of Sotra.

The primary objective of the well was to find hydrocarbons in the Paleocene Hermod formation. The well also targeted sandstones of the Paleocene Ty formation of the Rogaland Group. Lupus reached a TD of 7,733 ft (2,357 m) by theBorgland Dolphin semisubmersible in a water depth of 397 ft (121 m).

Tullow found good quality sandstones in the Paleocene Hermod formation but no hydrocarbons were encountered. The well will now be P&A’d and well data gained will be used to calibrate geological and geophysical uncertainties and reduce risks in future exploration wells.

Tullow Oil Norge AS is the operator of production license PL 507 with 60% interest. The other partners are Explora Petroleum (20%), Ithaca Energy (10%), and North Energy (10%).
