WASHINGTON, D.C. – Boundary disputes in the Bay of Bengal may be getting settled. A binding arbitration panel has ruled that India’s proposed method of determining holdings would be inequitable to Bangladesh and ruled in favor of the division proposed by Bangladesh.
This ends a process begin under the United National Convention on the Law of the Sea in 2009, says Foley Hoag, Bangladesh’s law firm for the purpose.
“The clarity and legal certainty that the award provides will allow us to fish in our own waters and exploit theabundant oil and gas beneath our continental shelf without hindrance,” said Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, the Bangladesh foreign minister.
Bangladesh had won a similar judgement in 2012 coveringboundaries with Myanmar in the Bay of Bengal.
