ERLANGEN, GermanyBP Exploration has commissioned Siemens Energy to provide direct electrical heating (DEH) power supply systems for 10 subsea flowlines for the Shah Deniz gas field in the Azeri sector of the Caspian Sea.

The order includes an option for two additional systems. Delivery is scheduled for the end of 2015.

Siemens’s customized topside DEH power supply systems will serve to prevent hydrate formation in the flowlines during planned and unplanned process shutdowns.Deepwater natural gas reservoirs and low temperatures induce hydrate formation, which can lead to flowline blockage or reduced capacity. Shah Deniz’s fluid characteristics and temperature conditions are said to be exceptionally demanding.

The deck-based modules will contain power components and a control and protection system (claimed to be unique) for the topside equipment and subsea DEH cables.

Additionally, Siemens will perform full-load testing of the containerized systems to verify their integrity and full functionality prior to shipment to Azerbaijan.
