HONG KONGCNOOC has made what it describes as a breakthrough gas discovery in the deepwater Qiongdongnan basin in the South China Sea.

Lingshui17-2 was drilled in the east Lingshui Sag, in an average water depth of around 1,450 m (4,757 ft). The well, completed at a depth of 3,510 m (11,516 ft), encountered a gas reservoir with total thickness of around 55 m (180 ft).

CNOOC says the outcome underlined the exploration potential of the structural and lithologic trap in the central Canyon channel of Lingshui Sag, and of thedeepwater area.
