HELSINKI, Finland – Bumi Armada subsidiary Armada Kraken Pte has contracted Wärtsilä to supply a 62-MW topside power generation package for Enquest’s Kraken FPSO in the UK northern North Sea.
The EPC delivery will comprise two identical power generation modules, designed by Wärtsilä Ship Design, each housing two 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF multi-fuel engines with generators, waste heat recovery units and all associated fuel, oil, air, and other utility systems.
The engines will be capable of operating on treated well gas, heavy crude oil from theKraken field, and marine diesel oil (MDO). This arrangement means that only minimal volumes of MDO will have to be shipped to the FPSO, which should cut operating costs.
Additionally, Wärtsilä claims, the gas-fired power solution should lower emissions of carbon dioxide substantially compared to conventional technologies.
Bumi Armada is converting the FPSO from a recently built Suezmax tanker. It will have a storage capacity of 600,000 bbl. The power modules are expected to be delivered in mid-2015, with the FPSO starting operations the following year.
