LONDON– Genel Energy says the semisubmersible Cajun Express has started drilling operations on the JM-1 well offshore Morocco, targeting the Cap Juby prospect.
The main interval of interest is a mid-Jurassic carbonate play, where previous drilling suggested the presence of a working hydrocarbon system. The secondary goal is to appraise the license’s existing upper Jurassic heavy oil discovery.
At the Genel-operated Sidi Moussa license, the semisub is due to spud a first well in mid-2014, probably on the Nour prospect.
Currently the rig is undergoing refurbishment prior to starting work for Genel on the Hagar Qim exploratory well on theoffshore Malta Area 4 production-sharing contract.
Malta’s government has just approved a six-month extension of the first period of the PSC to July 17, to allow the well operations to be completed.
