VIGO, Spain – Heerema Marine Contractors’ new anchor handling tugKolga has undergone a naming ceremony at the Estación Maritima yard in northwest Spain.
It is a sister vessel to theBylgia, which was named in June. Both were commissioned to replace Heerema’s Husky and Retriever tugs, which had been in service for more than 30 years.
The new tugs are equipped with a retractable bow thruster and have DP-2 capabilities. They are 72 m (236 ft) long and 18 m (59 ft) wide, which are larger than the previous tugs.
Each tug has a bollard pull of 180 metric tons (198 tons) and can hold up to 2,500 cu m (66,000 gal.) of fuel, enough to sail directly from Rotterdam to Cape Town. The anchor winch system can install anchors in water depths of up to 1,500 m (4,921 ft). There is accommodation for 40 people on both vessels.
Kolga’s first job is to tow Heerema’s Thialf from Africa to the Gulf of Mexico.
