ABERDEEN, UK -- The jackup Maersk Giant has spud Centrica’s latest exploration well in the Butch area of the southern Norwegian North Sea.

The Butch East well is drilling in 65 m (213 ft) of water in license PL405/PL405B, 7 km (4.3 mi) southeast of BP’s Ula field.

Centrica’sButch Main discovery in late 2011 flowed light crude from the upper Jurassic reservoir of the Ula formation. Butch East and the Butch South West well will test the eastern and southwestern sides of the large central Butch salt structure.

In parallel, Centrica is working on a development plan for Butch Main, according to partner Faroe Petroleum.
